Plus fuel required x Mileage (approx 1600 mile round trip) ~ Channel Crossing fare ~ sundry expenses (holiday/health insurance, beer chits etc. etc.)

Yes, was thinking the same .. umm bit of a logistics problem for us though

Add to that the attraction of getting pished on an overnight train and then waking up in Italy.....

DBD, have telephoned and asked for rough prices. The bloke is going to email me some details but says there are always special deals, 1/2 price ferry crossings, specials for groups of 4 or more.

Initial estimates, anywhere between £300-£500 each from Hull (Overnight to Rotterdam) to Allesandria in Northern Italy (Overnight on train). Much cheaper if we go to Calais as the ferry crossings are a lot less, especially when the free ferry deals are available.

Right, I'm sold. If I'm not riding it's Motorail for me.

Just been emailed quotes back and it would be £350 each for return journey, 4 bikes + riders, overnight ferry from Newcastle - Amsterdam & overnight train from Holland to Allesandria.

Leave Newcastle 16:30, arrive Italy 2 days later at 7:45

How does that stack up with van hire?

I was thinking van for 9-10 days (4 bikes will fit in LWB transit) + fuel + ferry + 1 nights accommodation in France for 2-3 in van + travel for rider no. 4 = £1200

Another bonus ball you both seem to have overlooked is tyre wear, going by train will save you about 2,000 miles, blimey dave you could do it on a couple of part worns!

Terry. I've shagged that sheep already. Fresh rubber for me. One of the reasons I didn't want to ride all the way is tyres. I only get about 2k miles on a rear. Although I could take Stevecat1 but the Pani was built for those roads!!

Why 4 you all go Allesandria (Northen Italy) You planning yer own tour (not fussed if you are, but it'd be better to start a whole new thread if you are )

If you's joining the www.thundercat-club.de (German cat site) Alps tour, you'll only need the Dusseldorf to Munich - Innsbruck or Salzburg train.
I'm guessing (because they're still debating dates and locations), but I think they're gonna be on the German side of the Bavarian/Austrian alps.
Not only is Allesandria to far south, it's a whole two countries away and the wrong side of that one too

I'd probably be up for that.
Can't say I've looked at the map but if the trip from Northern Italy to the start of the run has great roads then I could probably bring myself to handle it.
Once the German organisers set things in stone we can pick a monorail journey and timetable that fits us best.
I guess it is cheapest when you fill a while room (4 bed)?
If there is enough folks interested we could split the total travel cost between everyone to even it out if there is a big jump for singles etc.

Aye, same as overnight ferries. Price rises rapidly for smaller groups.

Reminds me very much of the D500 out of Baden Baden to Fruedenstadt, surely one of the greatest roads in Europe, about 34 miles if I remember correctly.

Need to work out travel arrangements as ferry times (and holidays) will dictate what I can do.

Are we basing at Berchtesgaden every night or are we moving around?

If I can only make the first few days OR the last few days which would be better?

I'm quite likely to use ferry to Rotterdam, Netherlands and travel from there.

Is it something that the locals would consider, is it economically sensible or would you suggest something else?

Spoke to Chris Eddie earlier so will hopefully be able to work out travel options for the northerners asap. Don't fancy the trek to the chunnel & the extra miles.
