Winter project!
First topic message reminder :
hi all!
Well the time has come to garage the cat for winter, so what better time for a stip down, paint, rebuild and some mods!
This is my bike on the day i bought her,
since ive had her ive fitted longer mirrors with leds in, HID light kit (thanks Rosco) and an R6 shock.
With this being my first bike iv decided to really go to work on her, I decided to go for the R6 tail swap and have been collecting all the bits for the swap, so this morning i stripped her tail down got out my hacksaw and started cutting! scary knowing that after that first cut theres no going back! lol, So i spent 3 hours in the garage this morning and ended up with her looking like this!
The sub frame is fixed at the top, all i need to do now is cut a bit more of the main frame off, weld some plates on to it with some lugs for fixing the bottom arms of the subframe to, i haven't fitted the battery tray, under tray or rear light yet as ill be stipping her right down to the bare frame for powder coating.
So thats it for now, i will post as and when i progress with the work.
Cheers,
Simon.

Re: Winter project!
Hi all!
I haven't been on here for a while due to xmas, new year and meeting a new lady friend (she's been taking up a lot of my time! ) also funds have been tight!
I have got my ar$e in gear and i have made some good progress, Ill keep it brief.
So... the bikes back together apart from the fairing, tank and what not, they have all had two coats of primer and are waiting a small bit of filling on the tank and side fairings, then i shall give them a last coat of primer and i fine rub down so there ready for paint, just got to save funds for that!
When i put her back together and fired her up she ran like a bag of nails and flooded after a minutes or so, she then wouldnt start again and the carbs were flooding p!ssing fuel all over the floor! cut a long story short after hours of playing with it and scraching my head turns out a carb float was stuck and not shutting off the fuel, got it sorted and she ran good but needs the carbs balancing.
so.... me being me and not having riden for a while thought id take her for a spin! no fairing and number plate zip tied on lol, I only went around the block, she ran well and it was so nice to be having a ride, untill... a police car came the other way pulling in to give way to me oops! the look on his face was of shock...just like mine! as you can picture no fairing, lights and what not it didnt look very road legal! lol, so back in to the garage rather sharpish and door closed down lol.
Here is some pictures of my progress!
what she looked like when i took her for a spin!
The extended wiring and everything crammed in the R6 battery tray.
Mock up of what she's gonna look like with the R6 rear end.
Side fairing with indicator hole filled.
My new little stubby levers.
well thats all for now, im skint till April as taking my new lady friend to spain next month, so hopefully she'll be back on the road by the end of April
Cheers,
Simon.

Re: Winter project!
Still cracking progress there Sy, I'm Liking the new tail and would consider something of this nature for mine (if I wasn't such a sh*tbag!! ). She looks really nice and I can't wait to see the finished article.
Try not to spend all your money on the new lady and save it for the old cat

Cheers Dave, yep can't wait to be riding her again! :-)
I got the levers from eBay and they came from Hong Kong, from what I can remember they were only about £25 which I thought was a great price, there great quality too!

Re: Winter project!
hmm this is an interesting find, as I would really like some stubies, thanks for the info and will have a look see.
Good luck with the final bits of the build, going to be a good looking bike there, the r6 tail unit with shotgun lights is a very cool thing, really like that.
bet your chumping at the bit for those fairings to be back on!

Re: Winter project!
I'm sure I've already asked this but here goes, what's the quality like, I'm just a but worried that coming from hong kong there's always a chance that the aluminium grade they say they use isn't what they actually use and you don't want one of these snapping. I know through supplying aluminium to Renthal that they heat treat the levers ( and pretty much everything else) after machining and prior to anodising to increase the mechanical strength properties.
That's why Pazzo levers cost £149 and Renthal ones are similar. I think I might save my pennies, (or speak to my nice contact at Renthal for a favour)!!

Re: Winter project!
There's probably nothing wrong with them Davie it's probably just me being paranoid, you know brakes and all, plus being in the industry and knowing more than I should about aluminium properties.
Just ignore me

Hi mate, the tail end is from an R6, its not a simple swap and takes a lot of fabricating,
Parts iv used are all from 99/01 R6.
Front and rear seat.
sub frame.
rear foot pegs.
battery tray.
battery.
Seat unit/fairing.
undertray and rear light.
All the parts were bought from eBay.

Re: Winter project!
Well the fairing and tank went in to the paint shop yesterday, im looking at 3 to 4 weeks till its done as he's busy, but im happy with that as its been done for a good price and he's known for his good work
I couldn't decide on the colour, i finally got down to two choices, bright met orange or burnt met orange, so i left it with him and he did say he had a colour in mind, he told me something pearl essence with silver flake in the clear coat, its gonna be a long wait! im excited!
So now im running out of things to do as she's nearly finished, so here's some pics of what iv done today.
Just a quick question (ill post this on a fresh thread as well),
my frame has been powder coated and theres no sign of the frame number, iv asked a few people about this and im told not being able to see it will fail the mot and could cause problems if ever stopped by the police, so iv rubbed the paint off but you can still bearly see it, its like its been stamped very finely and you can only just see it if you get the light right, will this cause me problems and what can i do?
Chhers,
Simon.

Looking good mines almost done, Just waiting for it to warm up so I can do the stickers.

Re: Winter project!
Well got my panels back sooner than i thought, I went to pick them up and at first glance they looked good with a few imperfections, he told me he'd sort that out when he flatted and polished them but said it'd be easier to do that when the bike was together, so i paid the man his money and off i went with a smile, so i started putting her back together when i noticed the paint was very thin and some of the edges were not covered very well! But i didnt pay alot (£300) so i guess you get what you pay for, ill see what he's gotta say when i take the bike to him to finished off.
well here is pics.
The panels.
And her back together.
My Fuel can was looking rather long.....so its now a stubby Fuel can! That'll be going on tomorrow.
Just a few more bits to be done and the stickers to go on in a few weeks and then she's done! Then i can spend the summer riding her
Thanks for looking,
Simon.

The R6 back end really gives it a different look.
Is the riding position much different?
