Re: Heated grips
Cover me I'm going in!! Got my heated grips back off my mate this morning so going to attempt to fit them.
I'm on a bit of a time limit as the plan is to be out on my bike this afternoon taking advantage of the great weather.
Will update you all later on my progress

Good luck. Make sure the bars are free of muck before glueing.

Re: Heated grips
Heated grips done took me a couple of hours in total, I was surprised the tough bit was mounting the control. There are no convenient 'flat bits' on the bike whatsoever!!
Anyway done now and off for a ride!!

Re: Heated grips
For when u get back from your ride:
There is a piece of Flat metal in the Kit, it bolts to the Clutch Perch and you can stick the controller onto it.
John.

Re: Heated grips
Hi John yeah I tried using that but couldn't get it to fit, the holes didn't line up and no matter how I manipulated it I couldn't get it to fix flush without getting in the way of something. I've stuck it to the inner fairing under the speedo, it's out of the way and out of the rain so it'll be fine for now, cheers John.Manor69 wrote:

Ride felt good by the way, missed that!!

Re: Heated grips
I doubt you needed the grips today. 14 degrees and sunny near us. So I sloped off for 2 hours this afternoon.
Not the usual winter clothing but not cold when I came back at 16:30 ish.
60 odd miles later back and happy.
Roll on Christmas.
Rich.

Re: Heated grips
Well so much for me mentioning the Hein Gerieke grips.
I have been through 2 controllers already, second one lasted about 30 mins (first unit heated for about 90 mins). Not sure if the controllers' are at fault or if I have another problem which is taking the electronics out - the rest of the electrical/electronic menagerie I have doesn't complain though.
Both cases bike was left standing for about 2 weeks and I get out to a flat battery, after the battery has been charged the grips won't turn on (although they are directly wired, I do remember to make sure they are switched off).
HG have been good and replaced the first controller straight away, I just need to build up the energy to take this one back too.
I'm not holding out much hope these will be long lasting, unlike the Oxford's.

Re: Heated grips
HG controller #3 fitted today. They have changed the design, the on/off and power level settings aren't electronically controlled any more. Also there are only high and low settings, so it looks like they have ditched the fully digital model (probably had too many returns).
So far it has worked longer than the other two controllers combined, just hope I don't need to make use of the 18 month remaining warranty.

Re: Heated grips
some people connect them to the rear light supply wiring so when you turn the lights off or the ignition, the grips go off as well, saves any accidents, oh and with a 10 amp fuse in line as well :-)

Re: Heated grips
I bought Roxter grips from ebay this week for £30.
I know, I know, they sound cheap , but as to quote salesman from H G when comparing their make to more expensive ones , "they are all pretty much the same really"
I connected straight to battery and attatched contoller to right hand side of yoke, as bracket attatchment supplied not suitable for fitting any where.
Went to work this morning @ 5am in pouring rain, and even though I could hardly see, at least my hands were very warm, though as mentioned earlier my finger tips were still cold.
As for leaving grips on when leaving bike, the fact that controller is right next to igniton and also has an LED light should prevent me from doing so.
Also instructions said that they will automatically switch off when battery goes down to a certain level, and indeed will also not start if battery is at a low level

Re: Heated grips
I've got roxters on mine too and they work fine for me.
Got them running off a switched live.
If it is really cold I sometimes clench my fists and with knuckles forward rest my finger tips on the grips.
Unfortunately with it permanently conncted some no-gooder passerby could leave them on for you but as you said the manual does say they will switch off before it completely drains your battery. Hopefully leaving you enough juice to at least bump start it.

Re: Heated grips
ive got the oxford ones never had a problem if my finger tips get cold i put my hands in my pockets cos my thottle sticks cruse control on a bike great
Re: Heated grips
You sometimes need to carefully trim a little off the end so they don't stick.
Cruise control on a bike sounds scary to me.

Re: Heated grips
A word to the wise regarding Oxford Hot Grips, they claim to have an in built cut off should you leave them on and the battery drops below a certain voltage.... It doesn't work!!
I currently have mine connected directly to the battery and I accidentally left them on when I met up with my wife after Into The Valley, came out next morning and the grips were still on but the battery didn't have enough juice to turn the starter
Luckily the campsite was on a bit of a slope so I was able to bump start it but lesson learned, 1st chance I get they're going on an ignition live !!

Hi I'm thinking of getting some datatool therma grips. Saw them when I was shopping for new gloves at bargain biker brands. In Chesterton.did some research when I got home they seem really good

Re: Heated grips
As from my post before I bought those datatool therma grips and they are great took me all of 30mins to put on and wire in very simple and easy to since I have zero knowledge on maintenance. Very good value for money at £61. Definitely recommend them!!
