Big Off Empty Big Off

Post  terry lees Sun Jul 10 2011, 16:02

Just had a fairly big off, between Hawes and Bainbidge on the A684 It happened on a very tight blind S bend, some very kind individual has dumped a huge amount of oil right across the road, the bike was down before I new what had happened with me following it. Badly damaged all down the left side, panals mirror bar end and worst of all the silencer (the'er £650 for starters) so its going to be an expensive repair. Police were fairly quick on the scene, and the officer was really helpfull, once he'd made sure I was OK he took off down the road to see if he could find the culprit, however he returned empty handed, but has promised to make more enquiry's. Its almost a criminal act, you dont drop that amount of oil, without knowing it, and more importantly doing something about it. So hopefully the barsteward can be found and I can claim against him/her (probably a farmer) otherwise its byby ncb. Anyway managed to ride it home slowly, footpeg smashed so difficult changing gear, just hope I can get it into some kind of shape fot BM

Oh man, That's not good news Tes, at least you're ok , Bike sounds fixeable..
Hope they get the inconsiderate w@nker (or w@nkeress) who dropped the oil..
A mate of mine at work had a lucky escape last week, car pulled out on him and he hit the back end of it at about 50mph.Luckily he got thrown clear over the back of the car and skidded down the road..Bike and car both right offs but he walked away with a few bruises. Snapped the forks on his bike and bent the rear axle on the car..
Luckily for him it was an old Pan european he was using as a winter hack and not his prized FZ1!! Had just given it a service and was taking out a quick run!!
Car driver was a biker too, her husband came to the scene on his bike and gave her some serious grief over it!!

Also , how does someone "dump oil right across the road " ?? What oil ? Oil they've just changed in their car/bike ? Or what ?

Think it might have been hydrualic oil, there was a indentation in the road surface just where the slick started where maybe a trailer or something had become detatched which would have split the coupling between the two, hence the large amount of oil. Do'nt think it was engine oil as this very quickly turns black once the engine runs for a short time.

Oh I see , that makes sense now. There seems to have been a few "offs" this year on here .Not good.

Thanks the concern, got of very lightly really the Hiene Geriche Taureg textile jacket did its job as did gloves boots etc. Probably all still servicable. Thought I'd got off scott free, but after getting home, my thumb is hurting, think i've sprained it slightly.

Wooster, thanks for the offer of an exhuast can. Two things, firstly its an FJR not a cat and secondly although the can is scrached bent and dented, there is'nt a hole in it. So if I can locate a footpeg and get it straightened out a bit might still get to BM

Oh No!! Hope your OK chap, the thumb will mend (why is it always thumbs that get it?) and you may be a bit stiff in the morning [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] but thats miniscule compared to how bad it could have been!! Good luck with finding the culprit and fixing the bike up

Really sad news mate, could have been a lot worse though so I'm glad you're luck held.

Hope the bike is easily fixed and they find the asshats who dumped the oil, unlikely though tbh.

Hi Terry,

Sorry to hear about the off :( A case of wrong time, wrong place. There's not a lot you can do about those situations.
I hope you are OK. Things should be aching a bit more now. I hope that's all you suffer from, but please get yourself checked out if needed.

I'm sure you're gutted to see the old lady damaged like that! I'm talking about the bike green smile She can be mended in due course. Let's hope you can get if fixed up enough to make the BigMac. If not, you know what...... you can always bring the Austin 7!

All the best,
Chris

Bloomin eck Terry really sorry to hear that.
Hope you're ok and mend quickly.
Be great if you can still make Big Mac but if you decide against it then you'll get refunded no problem.

If it will cheer you up I noticed our resident nurse posted this up......

Hope you manage to get the bike fixed without too much fuss (or expense).

If you do manage to make Big Mac which we all sincerely hope you do then at least you'll have something to moan about ...... heaven help us.

Ouch! Mind you, I've seen these Moto GP blokes crash just like that; seconds later they are up and about, pushing their bikes back on to the track keen to get going, I'm sure you were just the same :-)

Hoping to see you fit and well on BM,

Thanks everyone for your good wishes, slept okish last night, but the thumb is a bit sore this morning. Forgot to say yesterday what a good job the crash bung did. The bike slid a fair way and nearly wore through it but the engine survived with only a small scratch on the engine cover.

Oh dear Terry, so sorry to hear this. I do hope you are OK and its only the thumb. Wishing you a speedy recovery and all the best on getting the bike sorted.

Think I need to invest in some crash bungs, they do seem to be engine savers.

great
