Please sign - Petition to stop surface dressing of roads
Not usually one for this kind of thing but after a weekend riding the fine Welsh countryside felt compelled after seeing the shocking state of some of the roads.
They were nothing short of lethal, long stretches of twisties with tonnes of gravel dumped on them, a disaster for bikers and certainly an accident waiting to happen, not to mention the damage to paintwork, radiators and fairings. I was not the only one of our group who had a number of slides and the consequences don't bear thinking about.
I urge you all to give this some consideration, sign the petition and share it with as many freinds, family members other forums, social media etc to get something done about it.
The link can be found here
I'm sure a friendly mod will be along to tidy it up soon.
Thanks
Steve

Re: Please sign - Petition to stop surface dressing of roads
If I'm not very much mistaken, this petition was raised by one of my local IAM group's (TVAM) most respected members, ex-racer, very progressive rider and all-round good guy, Chris Caswell.

Re: Please sign - Petition to stop surface dressing of roads
I've seen this coming up on a regular basis and this article gives a bit of an insight into it.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Given the estimated cost of repairs in England & Wales alone is well into the £billions, it's unlikely they'll drop the practice if the alternatives are between four and twelve times the cost of surface dressing.
In a nutshell, we probably can't afford better.
There are guidelines that have to be followed though, so I could be worth making a direct complaint if standards have slipped.
i.e. The surface has to be regularly swept after the work to prevent piles of gravel building up.
Signed anyway.

As Wooster says, they won't take a blind bit of notice, but signed anyway.

Re: Please sign - Petition to stop surface dressing of roads
There's a programme on TV at the moment, The £15billion Railway (or something).
Given the estimated cost of repairing all the roads in England & Wales was estimated at £12billion last year, then wouldn't the money have been better spent (from everyone's point of view) in squaring up the infrastructure we have, than giving London another railway line?
...and while we're on the subject, HS2 is heading toward the £50billion mark without a hole having been dug yet.
By the time it kicks off there's every chance it could have paid for all those road repairs six times over.
We should start another petition called "Get the fecking finger out Westminster! Stop wasting cash on showcase projects and fix the bloody roads!"

Re: Please sign - Petition to stop surface dressing of roads
A couple of busy main roads in south Oxfordshire that I rode yesterday have recently been "repaired" by top dressing. What I couldn't understand was that they've repainted the centre and edge lines, but haven't bothered to sweep away all the loose gravel first - unbelievable.
Meanwhile, they've just laid a lovely new proper smooth tarmac surface on the main street in a nearby village, which has a 30 limit and takes no heavy traffic. Maybe a local councillor lives there?
