Surf & Turf - 18th/19th July 2014 - SIGN UP
First topic message reminder :
Sign up thread.
Due to the timing of Surf & Turf 2014 being a couple of weeks after the Tour de France Grand Departe accommodation is rapidly disappearing to the armies of lycra clad cycling enthusiasts sure to descend on the dales before and after the event.
On the plus side, it means that most of the really good roads have been/are being and will be resurfaced to be racetrack smooth and grippy as hell
The downside, looks like a 3 night minimum stay, even if we're only there for 2 and I'm going to need a deposit and firm commitment in the near future.
This year we'll be staying in Middleham, a major horse racing centre which used to be the capital of Wensleydale. I've negotiated a good price and provisionally booked a large self catering property called 'The School House' which is directly opposite Middleham Castle, home of Richard III.
There are no less than four pubs in Middleham – all of which serve food:
The White Swan is the foodie’s favourite.
The Black Swan attracts a mixed crowd, and sometimes offers live entertainment.
The Black Bull is a quirky, cosy local with a very good pint.
The Richard III is comfortable, family-friendly, and is building a reputation for its meals.
A short walk away along the bank of the river Cover is one of the best pubs in North Yorkshire, The Cover Bridge Inn, which has won many awards for it's beer and supplies excellent meals with portions large enough to sink a battleship. (Nick & Ellie, we'll be doing our best to make sure there's some Jaipur on tap for you guys )
Middleham also has a fish and chip takeaway, and a small Chinese restaurant and takeaway.
To make this work out as cheaply as possible for everybody we need at least 15 people for the weekend, that'll work out at £100pp for 3 nights!
So, if you could indicate below if you will be able to attend and whether you would like 2 or 3 nights so I can confirm numbers and book the venue that would be great.
Deposits need to be paid by the end of this month when I'll confirm the booking.
Come on folks, get your name down, we really do need a good turn out otherwise I'll lose the booking. It's a great weekend and the roads and scenery of the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District & North Yorks Moors are legendary.
Thanks,
Chris

Had a message from John Armitage this morning, he has unexpectedly been allowed to attend by his "war department" and as we speak is currently on his way from Cheltenham. Think that makes 13 of us now.

Hi terry. Just been speaking with Danny, he's not able to come. He had a toenail removed a couple of weeks ago & it's got infected due to steel toe boots for work & very hot weather I guess. Long & short of it if the b&b has a single room or I can share if needs be. Just giving a heads up to let the place know.
Cheers
Paul.

Well bloody typical all this dry hot weather we have had & this morning it's torrential rain. I'm thinking of setting off later as it's supposed to ease mid morning & trying to meet you at lunch or something depending on where you are. If it doesn't stop until later I will come later on for the beer & curry :-)

Re: Surf & Turf - 18th/19th July 2014 - SIGN UP
Yes the weather has put a real downer on today.
We'll be up for the evening session instead of the ride out as its non stop rain almost here for the past 3 hours and a lot more to come.
Linz hasn't got any waterproof trousers so that's nailed it.
Hopefully you all can muster an enjoyable ride today.
Shall see you this evening!

Well I'm setting off across, still raining but much lighter.
See you in a bit for a pint or 2 in the bar.
