Re: Need to spin for long before start
1) Carbs are not full...is there a leak from an overflow?
2) Plugs are not giving a bright spark
3) Choke maybe not working..
my guess is that the choke makes no difference if its on or off...cold days and you'l find it won't start at all

How do you know?
Does the fuel pump prime when you turn the key on? Do you get a buzzing/ticking sound? If so, how long for?
What is your starting procedure, exactly?

Re: Need to spin for long before start
You've mentioned in alternate thread about some black smoke when under hard acceleration, could be that you need to take out the carbs, strip em down and give em a good clean, in the interim a shot of redex and a good blast should blow away the cobwebs.

Take the bike out an give it a good old Italian tune up. In other words kick the hole out of it and rev it Rosco style through all the gears.

Re: Need to spin for long before start
Then there's probably your problem. If the bike has been lying around for a while it prob just needs a good blast. Ride the bike around like you stole it for a bit and it should clear it out. Either that or bring it round mine and I'll happily wring it's neck for you!!

In your case case ride it like you borrowed it force-ably Tom, you know about your penchant for riding bikes up the side of cars!!Dirt Bike Dave wrote:Then there's probably your problem. never believe anything that the seller "said"
take it you have a bike that needs a little sorting...they all do, their old bikes now so a bit of care will always be needed
Re: Need to spin for long before start
Black smoke, umm sounds like it is running too rich, or not all the plugs are firing properly.
A bike standing with low mileage worries me more than one that has been used. It is possible some of the jets are blocked. When I got mine it also didn't start as easily as the previous 'Cat, it also cut out for no reason at all and the idling was rough.
Suspect there was an idle jet or two that had gummed up from standing unused for a long time.
My cure was a few days hooning in Scotland - possibly more expensive option than just letting the mechy take it apart and possibly mess it up - but waaay more fun

Re: Need to spin for long before start
You cleaned the carbs out then
No it hasn't, but if you were doing those speeds it uses fuel - the worst I ever got was just over 110 miles before the light came on (but it didn't take too long to get to my destination )
