Ear plugs
Rode today with ear plugs in for the first time and noticed that I was going a heck of a lot faster than ever before (anyone who has seen me ride will say thats not saying too much).
Anyone got any suggestions for best plugs, now using H&S ones from work.

Re: Ear plugs
I use the standard yellow 'flumps' since they're cheap and I lose them all the time.
I didn't wear them at all for a long time and I've actually damaged my hearing in one ear. :(

Re: Ear plugs
Hi,
I use these, quite expensive but they last well and are really good:
Alpine Motosafe
They come with two different types of "inner bits" ( ) that can be swapped depending how much you want to block out. And a nice wee case to keep them in too
Cheers,
Tuan

Re: Ear plugs
I use a big bagful I picked up in a local bike shop a while ago. I always wear a new pair for each ride - can't be doing with an ear infection. They're soft and 'trumpet' shaped and I forget I'm wearing them until I go to talk to someone.

Re: Ear plugs
Ear Plus are something I've not been able to get with .. Deaf? yeah I am but I was born that way, so possibly I have eventually 'caught' up with everyone as I doubt my hearing has gotten any worse with decades of riding.
Have a big bag of the soft yellow ear plus, used them for a while but gave up on them.
Honestly though, not being able to hear is a bind, having to lip read and also work out what I hear makes sense can be very tiring. I've been doing it long before motorbikes, so for me its a way of life.
Look after your hearing, learning to compensate isn't fun, even though everyone has selective hearing, the real deal ain't nice

Re: Ear plugs
I bought bulk from a building trade supplier years ago and still haven't run out! Possibly cheaper than bike shops. Somewhere like this
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
I tried to made to measure ones - that's £50 I won't ever see again. Too hard for me, I prefer the squishy in-ear ones.

Re: Ear plugs
I have the made to measure ones too, luckily a freebie from work so it didn't cost me anything. I'm the same though Lee i couldn't get on with them, ok for a short while but too hard to wear for any length of time.
I don't use ear plugs now since i fitted speakers into my lid...just drown out the noise of the bike by turning up the ipod!!
I get the flump ones at works too so i'll bring a bag of them to Big Mac if anyone wants to try them out..
I know Terry lees has a pair of made to measure ear plugs that have earphones for your ipod built in...He reckons they are very good but they're no cheap!!

Re: Ear plugs
If I'm going any distance I use some Sennheiser in-ear sound-deadening earphones to connect to my sat-nav. They arent quite as effective as ear plugs but good enough to keep the noise down.

Re: Ear plugs
i can't ride without them - makes me feel dizzy (although my perferated eardrums probably don't help! just add to my scoliosis, deafness and arthritis someone up there don't like me!) - i wear the (cheaper) 'made to measure' ones as i apparently have weird ear canals from Plugz but obviously you need to be at a show or somewhere where they are for them to do the mould but for £40 they are brill.
You can get 'make your own' moulded ones - i think its R&G or Oxford that do them i know the shop had some in.
Most people i know swore by the yellow flumps but you can't get them now (can't remember if they said place had gone bust or been taken over) so its just a case of trying to find some although there's plenty others
I also got some quite good ones off fleabay with are small orange rocket shaped soft ones with a little black 'core' to push them in with (obviously they never worked because of my weird ears and like all the other they just slowly pop out over the miles hence my moulded ones!)

Re: Ear plugs
I wear the bud headphones with my ipod. Not on too loud but can still hear the music and words upto just over 70-80 ish. Then its just wind noise. I does depend on how well the the seal from the skirt around the lid is working though.
Music beats the wind or silence anyday!

BUT i generally ride with JVC ear phones on the way to work they are the in the ear hard foam type cuts out wind noise and can listen (quietly of course ) to my fav tunes. but it does mean i cannot hear anything if another biker tries talking to me, bad enough with just ear plugs in lol

Re: Ear plugs
I actually bought a set of headphones that already had an inline volume control in the cable and just took the speakers to bits..Did take a bit of cutting and fettling to get them to fit inside my lid without pressing against my ears once lid is on.
Cut the cable so the volume control hangs about 3 inches below the lid, then soldered the wires back onto the speakers and stuck the speakers to the inside of my lid with double sided carpet tape..
Fitted a female jack plug to the other end and just use a male to male to the ipod, that way only have about 4 inches of cable hard wired to my lid.
Had them in for over a year and they work good..can still hear the ipod good up to about the ton then the termignoni exhaust takes over!!
My bike is pretty noisy tho..
