Ouch expensive
As the Cat and I are off for a few days around Belgium next month, thought best get it serviced so duly turned up at local bike shop this morning. As the Cat has only done 6,500 miles on a 02 plate and I have owned it for about 18months puting on 5,500 of those miles I expected nothing other than the standard consumeables to need sorting. WRONG, as i stood talking to head mecahnic asking for brake and coolant to be changed, the Cat must have heard this and promptly started self emptying its coolant onto the floor via what turned out to be a seal in the water pump. whilst the cats gets used regularly now I guess its first few years of idleness did nothing for some of the seals.
Hoping it was just something minor I had to take a few deep breaths to hear £190 for a new water pump as yamaha dont do the seals it a new pump. Oh joy lets shove another £30 in Vat on that to the impoversihed government who are struggling so badly since being caught out on open cheque book expenses.
Well always looking for the silver lining, it could have happened on route or whilst in Belgium so just smiled and told Mr Mechanic to order a new pump and get the service done. The pump was not a part I fancied sourcing second hand as with my luck pump 2 would go somewhere west of Ghent late in the evening miles from anywhere.
I would not be surprised to hear there is a way or place to source the seals for the Cats Pump so if anyone knows the answer to that one then I would certainly be interested in hearing on that as I would get the seals and service the pump and at least have a good standby if I or another Cat owner needed one and was not inclined to contribute towards some MPs dodgey nightime DVD entertainments or morgage payments on their 2nd castle:evil: . O well I can feel me volunteering for a days overtime and escorting the next wind turbine along the M62 to pay for the repair bill. I guess pump, service etc is going to put a big whole in £400-£450.
Cheers

Re: Ouch expensive
Sorry can't help with the seals - ouch!
Mine has done the same thing. Stopped by the shop on Saturday to book the service and MOT for today and then went for a ride. Part way through the ride I hear a nasty noise from the back - suspect I have worn the pads to metal.
The bike knew it was going in today, so why do that to me :( I thought she liked the grease and spanner.
Will find out the damage shortly.

Re: Ouch expensive
Just got the cat back ,it put a £405.46p hole in £450. that said the guys turned the bike around PDQ and it runs lovely, clutch smoother, carb balance was well out so much improved . Hopefully T cat will look after me now I have given it £405 worth of TLC. wondered if the water pump seal is a common problem? Mechanic said the new pump that arrived seems modified so maybe an improvement on a known weakness?
Hopefully i will get out on the bike tomoz in between showers.
