Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
Hi all,
Is it possible to fit, say, a 5 gallon tank on a Thundercat to increase the range for touring?
TIA,
Bill

What!
The Thundercat already has a tank with a range that's the envy of most bikes.
Unless you're doing some seriously remote riding, when I guess the 'cat wouldn't be your best choice, then I can't see it being necessary. You already have one of the best.
Where are you hoping to tour?
Chris

Re: Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
I'll second that
The will make legs of 175 miles when touring before the reserve light comes on.
Why would you want to put a different (bigger) tank on it .. .. .. .. .. .. where you going ? Outer Mongolia !!!!

Re: Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
On the recent BC ride-out I got 57 mpg!! That was 285 km from 13.8 litres (and, might I add, the only one to do the whole day on one tank ), so I still had another litre or so left. Bungee a fuel can on the back for more range!
Seriously, unless you can find someone willing to fabricate a bigger tank I doubt you'll find one off the peg.

Re: Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
I was quite surprised reading that post too
I regularly return 65mpg out of my 'cat much to the envy of my mates on CBR's & VFR's.

Re: Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
my best yet has been 195 before the fuel light came on - think i must've been trundling that day - mine usually comes on around about 170-180 - only place i can think of so far with a surprising lack of petrol stops when i was there was South Island NZ where i got a bit panicked in the middle of a blizzard but even then i don't think it was 170 miles worth lol

Re: Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
cann't be riding mine hard enough / fast enough
commute 40 miles daily and always do 5 days 200 miles and light never comes on
although all is A13 / North Circular in London / Essex but 40/50/70 limits so no poodling along at 30!!

Re: Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
Well, I'm obviously the same as londonchris - I regularly get over 200 (think the record is 227 before the light came on) out of the Cat. Maybe mine is just thrifty with fuel cos it's from Scotland?
Yeah and before you say it... I know I'm slow!!

Re: Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
I find the range of the T cat to be quite exceptional, when I ride with a group of three or four others riding CBRs/ZXs etc at a similar pace generally my T cat takes the least fuel. One of my friends rides a VTR1000, cracking bike but it can barely do 100 miles between fuel stops!

Re: Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
Sure do
"dont believe what anyone else tells you your bike will do mpg wise"
especialy if there no fuel tap - reserve, no fuel light & the gauge on the last 1/3 of the tank is about as honest as an MP expence folder
since done 10k & fill up on the trip meter

Re: Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
Well mines not very good on petrol, coz Its restricted and I spend a lot of time up and down gears I think I get about 150-160.
Re: Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
Ezzy must just be awkward - i find i get more out of her when i use the gears - it's when i get lazy and go everywhere in 3rd that she drinks fuel like i drink vodka

Re: Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
Hi all, thanks for the responses!
I agree that the Thundercat has a great range for a bike but believe it or not the most beautiful places in the UK aren't anywhere near a city and rural petrol stations are becoming ever rarer and tend to be closed on Sundays.
My mate carries some extra fuel in those bottles that are designed for camping (i.e. proper fuel bottles) but I was a bit dubious about doing that; I suppose it's no different than having a tank full in front of you.

Re: Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
roflmao - sorry i just had an image of neil's face if i informed him we needed to start taking fuel tanks with us when we go out on a sunday - i live in lincolnshire and if anywhere was going to be short on things on a sunday then this is your county .... there's always a fuel station somewhere - it's just that occasionally you don't need to be very choosy about it (ie if you're short on petrol in skeg and you're going to boston there ain't one after you get 4 miles out of skeg until you get to boston) - as soon as my light comes on, if i've let it get that far, i go in the first available one if i don't know the area

If you were talking about France with the fuel station problem I'd agree with you. But I'm sorry not in the UK. Unless you're talking the far north of Scotland where I'm lead to believe they can become a bit scarce.
It's called planning your journey and fueling in good time. Frankly if you run out of fuel on a Thundercat in the UK you are either testing to see just HOW far it will go before it's totaly dry or you're looking for a numpty point.
EDIT: Hmm, I suppose my "short-hand" can get the best of me at times

Can I still get a numpty point if I say you've hit the nail on the head? Yes, I'm talking about NW Scotland really. I didn't realise everywhere else was so well off for petrol stations or I would have pointed that out at the start doh!

Re: Is it possible to fit a larger fuel tank?
Nah Bill, you're safe. You'll only get the numpty point if you manage to run out of fuel and we get to find out about it.
On a more serious note there must be a way of forward planning your trip around fuel stops. Getting a map from Shell, BP et al as to where their outlets are before you go maybe Hmmmm
After all the folk that live there seem to get by

Ezzy's Mum! wrote:could you pee in the tank??
Maybe after a few whiskies that would work but then I'd have to sober up to ride the bike

i apologise for that last comment of mine - there was a feminine logic in there at the time but i'd got a large gin in my hand and can't remember what it was now!
