When and how long would you want to go to the Ring in 2014?
Nürburgring - gauging interest
First topic message reminder :
After the apparent success of the Alps trip this year I was wondering if anyone would be interested in going to the Nürburgring for either a couple of days, a weekend or longer?
I've been to the 'Ring a few times over the years and its always been great. Also the area surrounding it is lovely and ideal for bikes and the distance to the UK isn't too far either so you won't need over-night stays just to get there. Obviously I'd have to meet you at the Ring as I'll be coming from exactly the opposite direction.
Date-wise I was thinking either a week in June or beginning of September 2014.
Anyway... this is just to gauge interest and to see if its worth organising it officially in the "How About" section
So how about it?
Edit:
I've added a Poll now to see what the most popular option would be. I would most likely go for a whole week and we could probably book a place for us all. If people want to go for shorter times we can probably arrange a swap-over mid-week or similar...
But let's see how the poll goes...
Just 1 lap sir . . . suits you sir, Oh ! . . . Use full screen if you can
Think a video of a Thundercat is probably more fitting
Oh and here the live Webcam from the Entrance at Döttinger Höhe:

A week in Sept would be ideal but if it's June I'll still try to make it.

Re: Nürburgring - gauging interest
Don't want to dampen anyone's enthusiasm, but . . . .
I've just read page 5 , right hand column (no jurno name) June 12 issue of MCN.
Headed: Ring Changes ~ Insurers rule out the Nurburgring.
The abridged version is:~
That although the Ring is a public toll (one way) road with no speed limit . . . UK insurers are not covering - and in some cases it's actually in the policy small print - riders while they are riding the ring.
They will pay out third party claims, but then seek to recover those costs from the rider through the courts.
So IF this trip does come off . . . please check with your insurance broker or under writer whether you would be covered for riding the Ring.
There are insurances that will cover you on a daily basis such as www dot moris dot co dot uk according to MCN.
I'm sure other good insurance companies are available.
Cheers
Tel

Re: Nürburgring - gauging interest
Wow... they really are tough on you with insurance in the UK! Doesn't seem to be a problem with insurance here though, just checked my small print
Anyway... I think as long as you treat it like a track-day in the UK, where you don't have insurance either, it'll be fine
And here some photos from previous trips to the Ring... bit old now mind you

Cool pics! I see someone had an off! Hope their insurance covered them
I'd be up for this but would only do a couple of days I think... will be watching this post.

I'm guessing so since that was in 2003... Luckily wasn't one of us though. So far no incidents there with any of the groups I went with...
If you just spend a couple hours watching in key areas (Adenauer Forst is one of the main ones really, that's where this guy came off) you'll see quite a few near misses and sadly a few offs as well. Mostly minor stuff as there's plenty of run-off but it does serve as a reminder that the track really needs to be respected!

Potential interest here, will be very health dependent though. At the moment riding the bike for 10 minutes tires me out :(

Re: Nürburgring - gauging interest
Hey Mike!
Would be great if you could make the trip. We could call it "Nürburgring 2 - The Return" or something dramatic like that
Also it'd be 10 years since our last trip there...

Re: Nürburgring - gauging interest
I would deffo be up for a trip but could only spare at the most 3 days, one to ride out, one at the ring and one for riding back.
There's a downside to being self employed, no worky no Wonga
Dont even mind camping for 2 nights dependant on weather of course.
Just a thought but may be worth starting a poll to guage interest for dates, duration etc.

Re: Nürburgring - gauging interest
Hey Tel, like the video you sneaked into the first post You could really try and memorise the track a bit from that though not sure I'd get anywhere near those guys' speed
Poll seems to favour September so far... any more votes coming?
Have looked at different options for accommodation...
The Hotel Forsthaus suggested by weasley looks good and with the current numbers of interested people would be a good option.
Sliders Guesthouse would also still be ok.
Another option could be renting a whole house for us and just splitting the price. That would be self-catering though. Not sure how people feel about that. I think this worked quite well on our trips to France and Germany in the past and there appear to be quite a few places dotted around the Ring and surrounding areas which could fit the bill.
Still early days so more food for thought really

Re: Nürburgring - gauging interest
Right... looks like the majority favours September 2014.
My calendar suggests Saturday 6th to Saturday 13th would be ideal so I think we'll go ahead and set up an official "How About" thread for those dates.
Tel, could you please do that? Or who's the man/woman for the job?

Sounds great, would depend on holidays/child etc for me but I shall keep a close eye on matters!
