hi from Macedonia and pls help :)

Hi guys. I'm new to sport bikes (enduro dirt rider) and I just bought 1996 Yamaha Thundecat. The biggest problem is that my friend told me (after i bought it) that is a big difference between 1996 model and all other years, i.e. that it is almost different bike. Is that true? Is really 1996 model that much different?

They may be referring to the USA, where they had a YZF600R from 1994-1996, which was what we called the FZR600. In Europe (continentally, not politically!) the only YZF600R was the Thundercat, launched in 1996.

I suspect they're wrong.
