Basic motorcycle maintenance course - London - 29th October 2013
There's a few here who are in or around London, thought of organising a block booking at one of Oval Motorcycle Centre's monthly courses. We can all go individually at different times, but could be good if we could have the demo's done using a not to mention meeting up with site members
Any interest?

OMC, if you don't know is a rentable motorcycle workshop - more infowe run a Basic Maintenance Evening. The course is designed to teach you how to check all the areas of a motorcycle that would or should be inspected on any service or pre MOT check and can help you to spot defects in the purchasing of a second hand motorcycle.
The course covers; Electrical system, Tyres, Brakes (pads & discs), Wheel bearings, Headrace bearings, Swing-arm bearings, Chain & sprockets, Forks & rear shock absorber, Control cables & levers.
The Basic Maintenance Course is run on the last Tuesday of each month from 7pm and costs £35. Each session has 10 places and will last for 3 hours, although sometimes can finish later as lots of questions are asked, which is a good thing. Please call for details and availability.

Re: Basic motorcycle maintenance course - London - 29th October 2013
I did see this a while back when searching the web for something or other...
It's certainly something that i'd like to do and would be interested in if a few like-minded forum members were about and up for it...Would certainly be useful

Re: Basic motorcycle maintenance course - London - 29th October 2013
Have got a date :
Tuesday 29th October, starts at 7PM - lasts about 3 hours, depending on how many questions we have. Cost is £35. More detail is in my first post.
They have 10 places per course, the more we are able to fill the more exclusive it'll be a Thundercat centric session. I may try and get some Thundercatters on London Bikers to join in to fill the spaces, but first shout is here.
Hands up please who can make this.

Re: Basic motorcycle maintenance course - London - 29th October 2013
Lets see how many want to go, I'll arrange with OMC that we can book/pay ourselves - might be able to give them a list of names, but will see how we get on.
I take it that's a yes
Will start a list in the first post.

Nice one Paul. It is fairly generic stuff, but if we have the place to ourselves, I'm sure we can have a poke about on an Ace too

Re: Basic motorcycle maintenance course - London - 29th October 2013
Have a good number going to this. Called and made sure our slot is still available.
Need to pay them to ensure our places. We can either call OMC individually and pay, or send me the money (Paypal or bank transfer) and I'll pay OMC. If the consensus is group pay, then I'll PM my details.
The apprentice there is active on London Bikers, I've asked him to find out from the two owners we know on that site if they would like to join us.

Re: Basic motorcycle maintenance course - London - 29th October 2013
I don't mind either way. I think part of me would rather it through you then there's only chance to make a mistake and we're all in it together, I don't want to go booking a completely wrong date or anything which, knowing my luck....
Send us over your details. I think I trust you

Re: Basic motorcycle maintenance course - London - 29th October 2013
It's still on, but the numbers are dwindling.
Definite's are you, Mr France and myself, Hilts might join depending on work commitments. A couple of people previously shown interest don't currently have bikes and a couple haven't said either way if they are still interested or not - I'll take that as a thanks but no thanks.
Was going to leave till next week before asking for the money, but if we good to go now then why wait - will PM details soon.
Whilst this event started with a Thundercat theme, it is by no means limited to Thunder*'s - if friends want to join in all the better. I might try and collar two guys in the building who have bikes. Mine could well be the only Thundercat there!

Date Change - Basic Motorcycle Course, London - 22nd October
Another forum had the same idea and 10 people called up and said they are in the forum group booking. Only problem was, no one from the forum had pre arranged it and OMC assumed they were linked to me. When I called to pay, OMC told me my friends had already called - seems I have 10 friends I don't know about
OMC have now laid on a special course for us, if we can't fill it they will take other people. It is a week earlier, which might work out better for some who couldn't do the 29th.
Possibly the word Basic is putting some off, I like to think I'm not a total idiot with a spanner and have done a fair bit of work on bikes over the years. I feel I know enough to know I can learn a whole lot more, I'm sure we'll be shown stuff which we wouldn't have though of.
There are three already booked and I have reserved another 3 places which they will hold till Friday 4 October.
Any interest?

Re: Basic motorcycle maintenance course - London - 29th October 2013
I agree Steve, the only thing I haven't done on the bike is an engine rebuild. I'm using this course to learn the correct habits of carrying out maintenance and the right frequencies in which it should be done. I'm sure there will be lots tips and it's an opportunity to badger the experts for their knowledge.Stevecat wrote:Possibly the word Basic is putting some off, I like to think I'm not a total idiot with a spanner and have done a fair bit of work on bikes over the years. Bookings now closed. I released the 3 places I had reserved, there was a waiting list for them, so guess they'll be gone in no time.
