Dont top yourself.
Keep the good bike. Inform dvlc that its off the road. (Don't ride it)
And wait until you can afford the bike. (Lottery or better job)
Simples.

Re: TomCom will finish with bikes
Good luck with the sale Tom, you may find that responding to questions about the bike and saying if you are available at the time someone has offered to come round and see the bike will help though instead of sending a half arsed reply bearing no relation to the question asked.
Just a thought as I was prepared to come over last Sunday with 350 for the black one but you failed to bother responding to a simple question about why the bike was being broken and what parts were not useable, now I wouldnt waste my time.

Re: TomCom will finish with bikes
Easy Tom - no need for such drastic action.
As Rich said you can declare it off road 'SORN' with dvla and keep it off road until you decide what your options are.
Don't make it the last one!!
Is the bike your means for getting to work and if so is it cheaper or more expensive to do it other ways?
Unfortunately running any vehicle is not cheap.
Petrol costs, insurance costs, maintenance costs, road tax. It all adds up.
No matter what folks earn if they spend outwith their budget they will have no money and get into debt.
If having and running your bike puts you over budget then either you can't afford it or you need to save money elsewhere or you have get more income somehow to afford it.
Family and home first. If it works out you can afford it then cool. If not then either sorn it and save up / improve your income OR sell it.
You can always come back if circumstances change.
Good luck
Rosco

Re: TomCom will finish with bikes
SORN your bike Tom, having a family & kids has to come first and that's why I've had to wait 20 years for a bike. It still takes some funding now even though I have a half decent job.
Good luck with the money problems, it's shite having no
Money

It's only stuff mate and stuff doesn't make you happy, at best it's a temporary distraction.
Look at it this way.
You might have to lose the bike now, but you get something to look forward to....getting another one some time down the line, and before you got bored of the one you have now.
Re: TomCom will finish with bikes
I echo what ellie has said. A roof over your family's head is the number 1 priority. Took me another 23 years to ride again.
Getting back on two wheels later on in life will be so much easier for you than someone who got bitten in their 30s or 40s.
Hope it all works out well for you and your family.

Re: TomCom will finish with bikes
Keep the bike if you can Tom.
I went through some hard times in the 1990's when my kids were young and my mortgage high, but I always clung onto owning a bike even if I didn't ride it much. I had a Yamaha FZ750 in those days, a fantastic bike, I kept it nine years.
Once a bike is gone it is very hard to get to a point when you can justify another one.
Keep if you can, even if you have to take it off the road for a while.

Re: TomCom will finish with bikes
Break your spare bike and get it on eBay, get yourself some money that way, ask for extra hours at work, look for a part time job, in a bar, restaurant, just what ever you can to earn a little extra.
Sorn your bike but try not to lose it at all costs it'll end up the biggest regret of your life.
I had a bike when I was young and gave it up for cars beers and the ladies. Soon family, mortgages and responsibility came along and certainly no funds for a bike. It took me 22 years to be in a position to get back into bikes and it's a regret I have to live with but 22 years wasted not having a bike is a tough pill to swallow.
It's easier to hold on to something you've got than Get it back when it's gone. If you sell the bike the proceeds will no doubt easily be swallowed up, how difficult will it then be to save this money again, plus insurance. It makes more sense to keep it and reduce the cost of owning it.
Agree with others though, family DOES come first, a roof over your head, food on the table and a warm safe environment for you children is the ultimate prize and if you explore other avenues and find the bike must go then this is ultimately what you must do.
Good luck with whatever you decide Tom

Been there too Tom, needs must and the bike had to go. I was more saddened at the thought my biking days were over. About 6 years later I bought the Black Thundercat, the biking urge never leaves most people

Hi Tom
I'm no expert when it comes to engines.
Maybe some pictures would help show the problem.
Cheers

Just be careful there Tom and make sure you read all the documents carefully, there's usually a cancellation fee in these cases which can sometimes be a couple of months premiums

Re: TomCom will finish with bikes
There's no easy answer. I sold my bike years ago to get a car. My Mum was chuffed to bits, but I found an OLD CB250t superdream and bought that as I decided i liked bikes after all. I paid £250 for it and hated it but it was a bike. I thrashed it for a year before having the money to upgrade. I never serviced it, or cleaned it. It leaked oil and had a buckled front wheel. When I brought it in to PX, the garage thought it needed repairing, it looked that sad. I told them to start it. 1st press and it started easily. The mechanic tried flicking the start switch. It started. i got back £200 which wasn't bad as I only paid £250 for it for a years motoring in all weathers including deep snow where I couldn't get the car out.
If you want a bike that much, you'll find a way even if it's something old with an MOT.
Good luck.
