Ah balls !!!
Ok so i have just filled my cat to the brim with diesel, mind elsewhere.
Posting from mobile as i await recovery so not able to search forums so sorry if already covered elsewhere.
Just want to know what the drill is. Is it just drain tank and refill with correct bloody fuel or do i need to do more than that. Havent turned the key as realised as i put hose back in pump. Tank was on the reserve just - red light just on and brimmed the tank.
Cheers in advance, numpty point i think if they are still around :-)

Re: Ah balls !!!
Drain the tank, refill with the proper stuff and good to go. You might get a load of smoke for a minute or so but it ought to clear up eventually.
In case you don't know, to drain the tank:
- take off seat
- undo bolt at rear of tank
- lift tank a little at rear - prop up with something if you have something short enough
- turn tap to "off"
- detach fuel hose
- attach a different hose for draining
- open fuel tap
- wait
You can work out the reverse directions!

Re: Ah balls !!!
I have a mate called Pete Dogleg (no, that's not his real surname - it does begin with 'D', but I don't want to get sued). Has no equal when it comes to numptiness.
Out with a new girlfriend on his beautiful new Daytona 675, that he'd just got after being on the waiting list for 6 months (for the bike, not the girl, I don't think he has that much patience), filled it up with diesel. Swift exit of girlfriend (though the Daytona pillion "seat" might have played a part as well). Thenceforth known to all as "Diesel Dogleg".
Then, some months later, out with a replacement girlfriend in his old diesel Mercedes, you guessed it, filled up with 50 litres of 95-octane. So now we can call him "Petrol Pete" when we get bored of the other name.
Amazingly he managed to get the car home and drain the tank himself, since when he's been drip-feeding the low-octane mixture into his old Fireblade.
Last time I saw him he'd just got an old Saab, with a petrol engine. I'm running a book on how soon he'll fill that with diesel.

With one important difference: Fill tank with petrol.
-Edit- I don't know why bikes come without the cheap plastic insert that prevents this happening.
(Maybe new ones do, I dunno)

Re: Ah balls !!!
I feel your pain Fraz as I managed to put petrol in my diesel car.
In my defence I was looking at a bike at the time and dreaming......Doh!
And I thought it only happened to stupid people.
Ah well me and you must be the exception to the rule.
Cheers

Re: Ah balls !!!
Its more common than you think, the amount of vans and trucks that get filled with petrol is surprising and who how many petrol trucks are on the road. 250 ltrs plus of the wrong fuel takes alot of explaining to the boss as well.

Maybe this should be a new thread, but here goes:
101 random uses for a tankful of old diesel fuel:
- Set up a refuelling depot at a model aeroplane gathering
- Stick it in your neighbour's central heating oil tank and wait for them to ask "What's that funny smell?"
- Bottle it and sell it as a laxative
- Build a distilling plant in the shed and re-refine it to get out the last remaining drops of petrol
- Give it to The Fuel Girls in return for a free performance
- Use it to start the barbecue, or save it until the next rainy Bonfire Night
- Colour it red and flog it to a local farmer
That's enough to be going on with.

Re: Ah balls !!!
Unlucky Fraz mate, never done it myself but have found myself frozen at the pump fearful of picking the wrong nozzle up and when I look they all look the same, it's some form of fuel blindness!! Or just my OCD kicking in

Re: Ah balls !!!
i did same to my car when i got new car i forget old car was petrol new was diesel .
its problem when you put diesel in petrol.
its less problem when you put petrol in diesel.
i hive car to garage and they take that off and change all filters.

Re: Ah balls !!!
Ouch Fraz, I fear the day I end up doing that - got close once. Picked up the black pump and realised there was a problem when the price wasn't right! Hose back before it got anywhere near the filler cap.
err, my understanding is of the two petrol in diesel is the worst combination. The petrol can damage the pump and mess up the injectors - usually more than just a drain and refill.

Same as Steve. I drive a Diesel car and a couple of times I have picked up the Diesel nozzle when going to fill the bike up, but so far I have realised my error before starting to fill.

Re: Ah balls !!!
Petrol in diesel in far worse and far easier to do; the petrol nozzle is smaller than the diesel one so will go in a diesel filler neck easily (except these new-fangled cars with anti-misfuel filler necks). Bike filler holes are huge and will easily accommodate a diesel nozzle, as demonstrated by several members here.
In an old-tech, carbed engine there's not a lot that could happen other than being hard to start and smoking a load.

Re: Ah balls !!!
Well chaps you will be glad to know I have had the tank drained, engineering manager in work cracked on with it to save me farting about with it.
Went and got some petrol popped it in and left it ticking over for a while with some lovely blue smoke coming out, now just been running up and down yard and seems fine other than a bit smokey.
Lesson learnt, also the fact that 200 guys at work have been ripping the pish out me, wont be doing that again.
