Front brake caliper
I was riding along today and heard a grinding noise, like a brake disc rubbing, and a knocking noise. Pulled over and had a look and my front brake caliper was hanging off! Both the bolts were missing. Whats the chances of that happening?? I'm pretty oblivious normally so Im glad I noticed!

Re: Front brake caliper
Gulp.....well spotted.
Nothing a couple of zip-ties won't sort.........ok maybe not.
It's normally me that has bits falling off although DBD had finger tight brake caliper bolts on a fairly recent outing I seem to remember.
Cheers

Re: Front brake caliper
Lol, bet that gave you a shock!
However, as with most things in life, you are not alone. One of our members had the same problem at the start of a ride-out to Scotland after grouping up at Devil's Bridge in Lancashire. However, that wasn't the major problem of the day - on closer inspection it was also noted that the contents of the radiator had also disappeared! This required the replacement of the radiator and new caliper bolts. I won't name names, but after a herculean effort all was fixed and everyone made it to the ride-out.
Might be worth reminding everyone to give the 'old girl' a once over before you mount. Check nothing obvious is hanging off, missing or frayed (that's another story)! Could help to avoid a nasty accident!
Hope you've managed to get this fixed.
Chris

Re: Front brake caliper
That could have been very nasty if it had jammed and locked the front wheel. O_o
I made sure mine were pinched up today (wheel off to fix a leaky valve).
I wasn't so lucky with one of the front mudguard screws though, the head sheared off. I seem to recall I was going to put a wee bit of copper slip on them the last time it was off to stop them locking (steel into aluminium is asking for trouble) but I must have forgot.
Gave the stump a good slegger of WD40 and left it for a bit, but that sheared off as well (sods law).
So I drilled it out and tried using an easy-out, but it snapped and left a chunk in the hole that couldn't be drilled out since it's made of HSS, the same as the drill bits.
...basically I just kept making it progressively worse.
In the end I drilled another hole above the busted easy-out and whacked a big self tapper in that you don't notice unless you are looking for it....sort of.

Didnt think of Zip-ties! I've picked up a couple of bolts from Fowlers now so its back on the road, no unplanned stoppies for me!
Stretchie, we're off 4 weeks today. Got about a million things to organize but we're getting there!

Should also check for leaks before and after the ride.
