hello all im titan

well i don't own a thundercat but been my dream bike since i was a kid but as i don't have my bike license i'm stuck with four wheels.

im hoping you guys can help me out with info on the engine of a thundercat etc as i wont to use one in my project (i know your gonna hate me for this lol) which is a rebuild on a raptor 660 quad bike i think the thundercat would make a much better option than the r6 most ppl use for this, hope you dont shoot me down before i start with the question lol.

so a bit about me im a quad bike enthusiast and like nothing more than a road run but my girl is tired and needs new guts i also help my m8's work on there bike from time to time love tinkering and trying to do things ppl havn't when it come to vehicles and like a challange hope to see some of you on the road i always give the bikers a nod as im flying about.

live in the vale of glamorgan perfect for runs around the back roads

Hi Titan,

Welcome to the site.

Sorry can't be of much help in the techy dept as I'm not a spanner orientated bod.

I'm sure you are aware that the main difference between the cat and R6 engines is the former is carborated as opposed to injected for the latter.
The cat achieves it's peak power lower down the rev range than the R6, something I would have thought better suited to off road use than a screaming lump. But as I've mentioned . . . what do I know ? I've no experiance in quads and not that mechanicly minded.

I'm sure someone'll be along though that can better advise. In the mean time enjoy your visits here.

cheers

yep your bang on the money the 660 raptor is a single cylinder carb engine which mean the fitting will be less complecated as there isnt much spare room for ecu and injection units in the frame i could go with the early carb R6 98-99 but as you said its a revyer engine and as quads tend to work at the lower end of the rev range means to much unusable power, the torque side of life come into play if off roading but this project is for a road only quad so dosnt play to much of a part but always nice to have the torque to pop the front end up from time to time lol so the cat engine seems to fit the bill much better lol

im a bit of an obsessive person i like to know everything about sumt before i go and do anything lol so im making sure i have the means to sort any engine problems early i wont be buying the bike to take the engine out till jan but need to make sure i know wat im looking for so i dont buy a bad one

Hi & welcome. Good choice of engine for the project, the cat motor has lots of low down torque & happily pulls all the way to the 13000 red line, good on fuel & very reliable. There is known problems of 2nd gear failing but i believe this is down to serious abuse rather than a defect. I know of cats that have gone round the clock with nothing but normal service schedules undertaken. Good luck with the project & keep us informed & take pics, cheers paul.
