Re: Hello
thanks for the welcome everyone
my 'cat is off the road for a week or two - leaky fork seals meant i stripped the forks down tonight to replace the seals, and found that some previous owner has been there before me and must have gripped the stanchions with something evil - both have got nasty damage around the sealing face, looks like they've been gripped with mole grips and then twisted, god knows why, but no big suprise they are leaking then...
.... so anyway, what started as replacing the seals and bushes, is now replace the stanchions, seals and bushes. small matter of an additional £200 on stanchions but i suppose its worth it in the end........
shouldn't take long to put back together, but theres a 10 day leadtime on the stanchions

Bad times, previous owners eh? *shrug*
Do you need any special tools to replace seals/bushes? I was thinking about this myself but chickened out.

Re: Hello
Owen,
I chickened out on mine. A local repair shop did them for £80 cash. One day without the bike and back as good as new.
Less hassle and less to go wrong!

thing is i chickened out the first time, dropped the forks off the bike and got the garage who was doing my mot to do the fork seals, and six months later they are leaking again, so i decided to take the plunge and do them myself this time. the only big challenge was getting the damper rod bolt out (on the bottom of the fork) and once i got that out the rest was easy.
didn't need any special tools as such but a long 10mm allen head socket would have been better for getting the bolt out than riving a standard allen key with a spanner and compressing the assembly at the same time was quite a challenge - we compressed the whole fork on a work bench with a ratchet strap, but apparently jamming a wooden broom handle sharpened into a 10mm square taper into the top of the fork before loosening the bolt in the bottom is quite effective too
