Anodised Sump Plug from China

Engine Oil Sump Plug - M14 x 1.5



I thought I'd take a bit of a gamble and buy one of those cheap, alloy, engine sump plugs from China (eBay).

Well, I have to say that I'm really pleased with the item that arrived ten days after placing the order. The threaded part is slighty shorter than the standard OE plug, but I can't see it being a problem. It has a good strong magnet as well.

You're wondering how much I paid for it? ... £1.89 which included delivery.

If you are thinking about buying any goods from China, please be aware that anything with a value over £15.00 with have 20% vat added to it when it enters the UK. The value includes the postage not just the contents. Royal Mail will pay the vat on your behalf and then ask you to pay them for this service which will cost you a further £8.00    it seems that you don't have a choice to pay HMRC direct, so a nice little money earner for Royal Mail.  

It might be worth asking the seller what value they will be putting on the customs declaration so that your £15.01 item doesn't end up costing you £26.01.

My £1.89 item had a value of $10.00 (USD) entered on the tax form, which at the current exchange rate works out at £6.60, clearly that is a mistake and you could end up paying extra charges when you don't need to.

That's a bargain.

That looks a lot better than you would imagine for the very small price.
